I've seen this a few times and wonder what causes it. Looks like the letters are hit five or six times. Can anyone help me understand this? *** Moved by Staff moved to a more appropriate forum. ***

w/ John1 Very cool looking in this case. MD = the dies are not as tight in the machine as they were when first installed. When the coin is being pressed, the dies move horizontally and a smearing (more or less) affect takes place which leaves multiple images. Do a search here for MD, you will find a lot to read.

This is tricky. It has the signs of being a true doubling. That is because the letters are incused. The rules are reversed for letters that are incused in the coin, which in turn are raised on the die as opposed to letters that are raised on the coin which are in turn incused on the die. So Mechanical Doubling generally causes a reduction in the size of the letters, while a true doubled die would have an enlargement of the letters. With incused letters, such as the ones on your coin, the enlargement is a sign of Mechanical Doubling.

The rule for MD/DD is: Raised devices- Apparent doubling, reduction in size of devices - MD ( Machine Doubling)
- Doubling, enlargement of devices - DD (Doubled Die)
Incuse devices- Apparent doubling, reduction in size of devices - DD (Doubled Die)
- Doubling, enlargement of devices - DD (Doubled Die)
The coin in the photograph exhibits Machine Doubling due to the enlargement of the devices, and the fact that they are incuse.

Sweet thanks for the info I had an idea about raised doubling and enlargement but wasn't aware about the incuse being smaller for a DD. Good to know.

I had originally figured that the inner part of the letters that are still level with the field would show the doubling which is what I had gotten used to looking at.

I will add the pictures of this first struck coin. now remember this is in the first 1000 coin made from this new 2018 dies. I would like to know every bodies thoughts.
