Hello,

This is my first post. Several members suggested I post some images of an interesting coin from my newly inherited collection to get started here. I don't really know what I'm doing yet--the coin is in plastic and I was told not to touch it with my fingers, so I left it in the plastic. Can you use plastic food prep gloves to handle the coins or do they have to be some kind of cloth glove?

Any help with identification and value of the coin would be much appreciated. Thank you.

It's five dollars from the Bahamas, back when they were ruled by Britain. According to this It's silver and and was only minted for one year. There are some listings for sale at the bottom of the Numista page that give a relative value.

Still a very nice coin made of silver, sadly not that collectable.

Once you know the identity of your coin, you can do a search in ebay to find out what it can be sold for.
Here you can find examples of your coin in uncirculated condition that have sold recently.

Actually you SHOULD take it out of the plastic because it looks like the kind of plastic that causes PVC damage to coins.

If you plan to keep it, take it out of the plastic (cut around the plastic carefully), and handle it by the edges only. An acetone rinse would get rid of the PVC residue. Cotton or food preparation gloves would not hurt. Then put it into an inert holder.

That being said, the coin is only worth bullion value, but it does have over an ounce of silver.
