This came from a legit source, although not a specialist in ancients, and is currently identified as a Venice Trade Ducat 1150-1300. It's gold content is .098 of a Troy ounce.

The "coin" appears circulated with wear on the high points but retains nice golden hue and a bit of sheen in the right light (not surprised as it is gold).

I've scoured the internets all night. Starting with absolutely zero knowledge in regards to any coin before 1813 I learned a lot but I failed to correctly ID this piece.

Please, if any one can help with the following- authenticity, identifying, grade and value. NOTE: Metal content was tested on one of those super fancy high tech machines so I know that part is legit.

I have a lot of trouble taking pics of gold coins so I opted for a setting on the camera that makes the coin darker as I was trying to capture the details this removing a lot of the beautiful gold luster.

Even with some wear the detail should be clear, the details on this are very mushy. I don't believe it's genuine.

echizento I came to a similar conclusion while doing research following Bob L's excellent suggestion. In fact, I came across ad read a fascinating (and free) book titled The Venetian Gold Ducat and its Imitations by Herbert E Ives.

The weight is correct. The gold content is correct. I paid spot.

Motive? Who benefitted? Who lost? I don't quite get it.

Granted I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed but what am I missing here?

It is legit.

I am a passionate, stubborn man who when faced with a challenge just can't let it go. I'm not going to bore you all with the very lengthy and complex steps I took. It is a very long story. I can be a bit overzealous at times as well ;-)

If any one is interested (in the story) feel free to contact me via the forum's system.

My initial identification was way off, and the horrific photos did the opposite of helping. Both of the aforementioned are my mistakes and certainly did not assist the members' efforts assisting. My apologies and future posts will be better presented.
