I've got a 1991 quarter that has what appears to me a copper drip spot right on the temple of GW. Keep in mind, I have no idea what I'm talking about, lol. As I have no experience in coins. Which is why I've come here. I've had this coin a long time, probably half of it's life. The back also has some copper on it. I joke around about it as in the title, a copper colored Lincoln Penny shot Washington leaving his mark on him. I know, silly, but that is the first thing I thought when I seen this coin. Hopefully some opinions on what could be or happened here, is it an error coin, and does it perhaps have any value with it's uniqueness. At the very least hopefully someone else here finds it interesting.. I'm sorry that I haven't been able to put some better quality pictures up as these really do it no justice. Thanks for looking and any input.

@Ace08, first welcome to CCF. Second, just to clarify, is the region inset (below the rest of the surface of the coin)? It certainly could just be damage, but I don't see a corresponding flat area on the reverse.

Thank you. Yes it's like a micrometer below the rest of the coin... Looking at it closer now since you mentioned that, perhaps it's a chip missing from the surface? The backside though is all of one even surface. I will add though that the pictures for the back do not show it's color well.

Ok interesting. My initial thought was that it is just an indention, but perhaps some of the coin's surface was mechanically removed by some other means (like an end mill).

On the other hand, there could be a section of cladding missing. That would be pretty unusual and beyond my meager abilities to discern. I'm sure others will be around later tonight or tomorrow with their thoughts. In the meanwhile, the color of the rev is probably unrelated so additional pics of that are not necessary. What would be more useful is an in-focus close-up shot of that area on the obverse. Also, the weight would be good to have as well.

That hole is pretty interesting. I'll see what the others think.

Looks like a simple stain. It's even the same color as the stain on the reverse. Probably some JB weld or something

Thanks for thoughts and opinions, greatly appreciated. For the spot on the heads side I do not think it's a stain, it's definitely like a chip of the surface missing. The reverse or tails side I wouldn't count a stain out of the possibilities though. But it also looks like some of the pictures I've found that have like half the coins surface copper.. Again, though I do not have any experience, and I thank you guys for your opinions and any more that come. I've tried getting better closer more focus shots of the quarter but I don't have the right camera.. maybe if I get an attachment for my phones camera... Until then..

Without better pictures it's kind of difficult to really determine what's going on here. Although I would like to say from one new member to another
It is not enough to merely enjoy coins; one must Advocate for them!
