To me lt looks like a contact mark. The affected area doesn't look any larger, just altered..

Could be and probably is but I don't see indication of contact on the surface texture.

Quote: Is me or is the bottom of earlob wider than the other picture? I did an overlay and whatever is below and to the side of the the ear is "extra". Well if I find another one like it, then I'll get excited.

Unusual. Good eyes to pick that out.

Just looked at it again, it is definitely a stain. It creates a full circle on top of the earlobe.

Quote: it is definitely a stain. I disagree. I don't think a stain would reflect the light like this does, but, maybe your right

Bob Piazza asked me to send this to him for attribution and it's not going to cost me anything. Very nice of him and an offer I can't resist. Feels it is probably PMD but there is enough "maybe" that he wants to look at it in hand. I'll let you all know the outcome as soon as I hear back.

I'll be on pins and needles waiting for the outcome. The fact that coop and you both thought it looked like a contact mark and since I haven't found another one I'm beginning to weight heavy on PMD. We'll see.

If you get lucky though, it will be the first listed Doubled Die Obverse for 2018. I hope it's a Doubled Die Obverse, but I'm still unsure somewhat. Good luck to you buddy.

Better yet, It would be the first double ear for a SC. Deep down I just don't think it is a DD.....but it kind of looks like one.

Overlay confirms that the metal is in the area where the earlobe would have been. The last image you posted you can see where the metal is level where it pushed it back and is un-even. So I'm leaning also to MD/coin damage.
