So, I suspect the majority of you think I am crazy, taking in tens of thousands of nickel dollars annually, and searching them one by one, before they go to the alloy recovery program... I suppose there is an element of craziness to it... but out of every 5,000 coins or so, I find a real winner... and that makes the whole hobby and thrill of the hunt worthwhile for me... I sent down a handful of nickel dollars to PCGS earlier this year, most were upgrades in varieties, and a couple were sent down as 'potential upgrades'. This is one of my 2017 bucket search winners, not bad for a purchase at face value: https://www.PCGS.com/cert/35006093 "Discovery follows discovery, each both raising and answering questions, each ending a long search, and each providing the new instruments for a new search." -- J. Great set and kudos to the fact that someone actually documents these coins ...Although I must express my personal disappointment of not having made the list of top "bucket" contributors...I'll try harder...lol...BTW, the variety link is non functional and (requires a login).

A #1 set with PCGS built with coins at face value, could be easily duplicated by someone else with enough patience, and a good eye for grading nickel composition coins, with the nickel 50c series. I also go through those (the dealers insist I take them), and have sold or traded a good number of pieces over the years from that series to some PCGS Registry players (including a CCF member). Most notably, this is one that cost me face value, and it graded PCGS MS-68, I sold it to TCNC for $500.

Since this is a hobby, which means you do it for fun, and you enjoy going through these coins specifically, then how can someone be right if they say you are crazy? Letting someone else dictate what we think is fun is what deserves the title of "crazy." This from a guy who also collects date nails - larger nails with dated heads that tell what year the tie was installed. It was a way of scientifically testing which treatments and woods lasted longest. It was fun hunting them and collecting them, so I did it! Very nice finds. That 1980 is a beaut!
