Hello, I just checked the mint website and saw the new commemorative 2008 silver dollar. It looks good, though I don't think I will be buying one. I find mint products depreciate over time, which is why I tend to avoid them... What are your thoughts, on the new coin, or mint products in general? I would say there is much better value in the older coins than in the newer releases. But if I really like a new release, then I may buy it. Few new releases retain value let alone even appreciate in value.

Buy what you like has always worked for me. Get educated and don't pay too much. With that said; I have, at times, paid too much. At least I did it with my eyes open and had my reasons. I like purty coins, some people here will ohhh and ahhh over what looks like a slug. It takes all kinds to make the world go 'round.

I purchased one from the mint a few weeks ago because I thought it would make a nice addition to my silver dollar collection. Price wise, it was no more or less expensive than any other recent proof silver dollar that the mint has issued.
There are a few newer coins that have gone up quite a bit in value. The issue price for the '02 Queen Mother was $49.99 and it regularly sells for $300. Charlton lists the value for this coin as $425-$525, but that may be a passing fad.
As Parklane64 mentioned, if you like it, buy it. Just remember to do your homework first.

I have a question on the '02 dollars: I have a proof, (silver), identical with the one shown, top left, page 234. It is a proof, as evidenced by the metal, and frosted devices. I have another, identical except that it has a mirror finish, and is silver. The reverse is identical with the '03. It is not gold plated, nor is it frosted, as in Proof. It IS, however much more elaborate than the silver proof. Which coin do I have? Andre? Anyone? thanks,
Dick

Livingdinasaur, do you have a pic of the coin that you could post? If it's a Canadian coin, there were three different Proof dollar coins as well as a Brilliant Uncirculated dollar issued by the RCM for that year. Proof Coins - Golden Jubilee of Elizabeth II - Gold Plated Golden Jubilee of Elizabeth II (only found in Proof Double Dollar sets) - Queen Mother Brilliant Uncirculated - Golden Jubilee of Elizabeth II Regards, Steve

Steve, It is illustrated in the 2008 Charlton catalogue, and appears to be the first two types. It is not the Queen mother, nor the gold plated one, so it has to be type 4. (Or at least the last type you listed, or as another possibility, the second coin in the two dollar set.) I know the one is type one. I am not "rigged" at the moment for a photo, so It will have to be posted later. I am legally blind, and have no frontal focus. You will see misplaced letters, and caps when least expected. I can't "proof-read" my text very easily, so I try to "get it right" the first time. Unfortunately, I am not a typist, either. The reason I ask, is that I just got them, and was looking at the book, when the question came up as to which one was the "'02", which was mentioned avove. I found out it was the Queen Mother, and not one of mine. Thank you for your response, and a big welcome to the forum! Dick

Steve, here are the photos. First two are the type one, and the second pair, appear to have a golden tinge to them, when viwed thru a loupe. What say you? Dick

Hi Dick, thanks for posting the pics. I was looking for a link in your earlier post, it never dawned on me to look at the Charlton catalog The coins all look like they are the 2002 Golden Jubilee of Elizabeth II silver dollars. Here's a side by side pic I took of my coins for comparison (sorry in advance for the mediocre quality)....... From left to right they are the Proof dollar, Gold Plated Proof dollar from the Double Dollar set and the Brilliant Uncirculated dollar. I hope this helps confirm which coins you have. Steve PS Thanks for the welcome!
