I'm sure this is probably not a special quarter. I am still very curious as to what makes it this color. I have a 1966 that has similar coloring but not as sharp. It's not dirty and the obverse is smooth.

Environmental damage. After acquiring that color, it has re-entered circulation. The high points are being worn, therefore exposing the metal underneath. Why not keep it as a pocket piece just for fun and watch the environmental toning slowly wear off on the high points?

It's Environment Damage, but it would make a good pocket piece. You can keep it if you want, but it's only worth face value.

We call this surface look 'circulation cameo' - whereby the lighter colored portraits stand out against the darker covered fields.

Your coin was on the way to getting there ... nice find

Yep just environmental toning. Looks kinda nice, but no numismatic premium.

Since it's only worth a Quarter I would turn it into the ultimate circulation cameo by finding a solution to remove all the black carefully from all the devices with a Q-tip or other small soft tool .
When your finished , post it again on CCF . Just don't try to sell it on e-Bay .

Thanks everyone for the information. My first thought was environmental damage but it was so evenly distributed that I wasn't sure. My second thought was that someone painted the coin years ago but that's not quite the look it has either. I think I will hold onto it though. It is a great representation of two of my favorite things, nature and coins. I enjoyed the lesson of the homeless quarter and do not worry it will not be for sale on ebay but I might just have to make a you tube video of this RARE quarter worth millions ;) Thanks again!
