how many solid silver Kennedy half dollars were made ?
there is no proofs that year. no mint sets either.I just sat and stared at it again.my thousand dollar metal detector does not lie.a 1964 reads the same.I can not see any copper and neither does my detector. copper clads read 80 and pre 1965's read 74 on a computerized VDI scale. so am I wrong about there not being a silver one being made?P.S.I got it a block away from the P mint.

The best way to make sure is to weigh on a pocket scale.

1964 Kennedys were 90% silver and 1965-70 were 40% silver. 90% silver weighs 12.5g, 40% silver weighs 11.5g, and copper-nickel clad halves weigh 11.34g.

January 18th 1837 an "Act" was passed that called for the "half" to be specified 206 1/4 grains, .900 fine of silver......this was not changed until the "40%" one in the year 1965.
There is no "solid" silver half.....they're bonded to an "inner core" of copper or copper/nickel depending on the year....right?...so....
Even coins that are .9999 silver or gold are not "solid" technically !...Ha Ha

What year of coin is this ?...Is it a 1964 Kennedy half that you're asking about ?...I'm a little confused here !
Post a pic of it up here and let us see it.....

Only for 1965-1970. The pre-1965 90% silver coins are an alloy with 10% copper mixed in.

Kk.....Yup !.........so not "bonded/inner core"...with those dates, but instead "mixed".... regardless....I guess I just kinda meant that his coin isn't a "solid pure silver coin" .....whether he has a "pre-'65" or a "post" '65.
Good eye though Jbuck catchin' that !...(again! ha ha)....mis-information can be an ugly thing to see I know !
Using the word "solid silver" even when referring to a 90% coin is far from accurate, let alone a non-existant "solid silver" '66 Kennedy.
In case he was wondering if his 1966 Kennedy was .9999 Silver.....which it could not be........is where I was focused !

I would call the 90% silver coins "darn-near-solid" and the 99.9% bullion coins solid since they are "...containing the minimum of alloy necessary to impart hardness <solid gold>." One can probably debate on what the minimum is, but IMHO for circulating coins the minimum is 10% and for bullion it is 0.1%.
