Whether it's an issue of ethics, ignorance, or the fact I'm half blind and have 2 left hands I don't clean, molest, alter, talk dirty, wash, or iron paper money, especially if the note is worth even a penny more than face value. Note: I will flatten a ruffled modern note for fun. I don't know a "paper conservator", in fact I did not know such a vocation existed until 5 minutes ago. I have a small spot/smudge, of an unknown substance, on the margin of a note. It is only on one side and does not bleed or show through to backside. I would prefer it was not there. The note belongs to a friend and is not rare but is collectable. Should he remove it? If so, how? Help please.    |

I would probably start with warm water and a cotton swab.

buttttttttttttttt.. I already used the scissors. They worked great! The spot was gone instantly!

If you are just experimenting, try a little dab of juice from a lemon on a Q-tip
|

If that doesn't eliminate the stain, you could try a diluted sample of a laundry product called Shout. This product is specifically made for clothes, and US paper money is basically a combination of cotton and linen. |

Blot with the swab DO NOT rubbbbbbbbbbbbbb!!!! Don't saturate the swab, give the water a chance to work and start from the edge of the paper.

Thank you all. I could not have asked for a better consensus.
1. Gather supplies from store and set-up little work area.
2. Start with water then I'll try dab of juice from lemon on half and dab of diluted Shout on other half.
3. Saturate with water, let it work, then dab not rub with high quality cotton swab. Then swab technique on lemon and Shout halves.
Do you all know or can point to reference source that contains detailed information about the exact materials the "paper" is made of that is used for printing various notes? Not modern/current notes but 1969 and earlier for example.
