Is this coin MS? I bought it for MS a long time ago and it sure seems like it, and I hate to be doubting myself, but I was really shocked when a lot of people said it was AU on cointalk. If it isn't an MS, I'll learn from my mistake and move on. It seems that the top of the strike is weaker, but even when comparing it to certified MS coins I really cannot find any real difference.

Anyway, here we go:

I can try for better pictures as well. But, as usual, I worry too much : /

it looks MS, and if it is it will be a 64/65!

How do you tell where wear is (no pun intended) without looking for loss of design? I was told that this is the 'areas where there is a luster break' but I looked at a lot of MS certified examples and saw the same 'browner flat areas' on elevated points.

Hi Shadow,

This coin has luster and appears to have full details with no obvious wear. What you would need to do is inspect it under a good light and tilt it back and forth to see if there is any dullness or loss of luster on Liberty's cheek and along her bust, and also on the high points of the reverse wreath. If luster is intact in these locations then I'd say it's mint state.

There appears to be quite a bit of original red color remaining, but the carbon spots are going to limit the grade. I think MS-62RB would be about right.

I didn't see any color change from a normal angle when I rotated it. Then again, I could just be biased. When I get more money, I might as well send this in with the draped bust Half Cent to PCGS. Too bad the coin isn't missing that big carbon spot on the obverse, that seems to me as the main limiting factor, don't know if I'd go with 62, but it's definitely going to limit it. Without that spot, it looks to me like it might make 65. Then again the one near the H on the reverse is also pretty big, so hmm.....

Hi Shadow,
I can't get the photos quite right, but my 1833 Half Cent is graded MS65BN by NGC. I've posted it before, but for this thread it might serve as an MS65 example. It has super cartwheel luster and some beautiful blue obverse toning. The reverse has lots of original red. I think this coin is solid for the grade.
