This, and what appeared to be it's evil twin (a counterfeit 1909-S VDB, not pictured) was the third coin from the collection that caught my eye.

These are the best photos I have. I did not save an image of the counterfeit. Sorry.

Odd, the MM position is almost exactly where it is on my fake. This is a genuine VDB with an added MM:

Doesn't look even close too yours Thad. OP's mint mark is quite a bit left of yours...

Time to put my incredibly poor image editing skills to the test!

I took both coins above and ran a red line through the "0" in "1909."

I'm not experienced enough in this hobby yet to say if that's a real coin (especially one that valuable!) but OP's coin does not appear to have the same mintmark placement as the fake coin. Hope I helped a little!

Comparison with real MM #4 shows nothing out of the ordinary.
Source, and decent quick reference for comparison:

Well, my fried had the coin authenticated and slabbed, but its evil twin was sent back in a body bag. I sure hope we took the photo of the real coin! Too long ago for my memory. Anyway, the intent of this post and the previous two (1917-D SLQ and 1916-D MD) was to share some enjoyable moments and photos. I am currently helping another friend with his dad's collection. It is a lot of work, but it is loads of fun! Such a fulfilling experience when I can use my numismatic knowledge to help a non-numismatist friend determine which are the most desirable coins in their collection! Who knows, maybe I'll get them interested in the hobby?

Johnathan, comparing location of a fake isn't useful, given they are applied by hand, variations are to be expected.

For a coin like this, where there are four known dies and the MM was applied to the die by hand, the alignment is one of the key diagnostics.

What kbbpll did - comparing it to the known genuine - is the appropriate standard.
