2001 D Rhode Island Quarter With Error.

So I found this quarter that was minted in Denver and it has an obvious error that looks like a big C bubbled out just under where it says Liberty If it is a C then the top would be at the you in United, the bottom would at the Q in Quarter and the open part of the c is at his chin. It bubbles out on the face of the coin yet it is still flat on the back and it is obviously under the lettering of Liberty. I've looked all over and have not seen lf anyone can educate me on the possibilities of how this happened it would be awesome.

to CCF. It has been heated causing the bubble. It is a damaged coin aka PMD.Value=25 cents.

@sid, first welcome to CCF. Second, yes when we see these bubbles/wavy surfaces, we generally attribute this to overheating.

To CCF! This isn't an error at all. This is Post Strike Damage (happened after it left the U.S. Mint). It was heated with something hot, causing the bubble to form on the surface. Unfortunately, it's worth face value (25 cents).
