mklpatrick,
I'd have to say a high G 4, maybe on a good day VG 8?

OK, I was thinking G4 because I tend to lean on the conservative side...I'm still kinda cutting my teeth on the whole grading process. Thank you for the input!

mlpatrick, Me too, I just got a copy of the official ANA grading standards this week, VG 8 requirements state entire design is weak, most details in gown worn smooth EXCEPT for coins after 1921, which must have half the stripes showing. Drapery across body is partialy visible. Reverse about 1/3 of the feathers visible, large feathers at the ends of wings well seperated. Eye is visible.

John - Where can I get a copy of the ANA grading standards? Hope it's not a dumb question, but I've been away from the collecting arena for a long time and I'm trying to play catch up here!

mlpatrick, I got mine on ebay, it's a 6 th edition hardcover spiral bound version. I got it for 0.99 cents plus $2 shipping. I just checked Brent-Krueger online, they have them also for $12.95 + shipping, and the paperback version for $10.95, I'm sure other online dealers in numismatic supplies would have them also.

Cool...are any of these guides better than others, or is it a personal preference. I see that NGC and PCGS have theirs as well.

I can't speak for the NGC or PCGS guides because I don't have them (yet). All I've had previously was the Red Book. I would assume the NGC and/or PCGS guides would be helpful if you had a few coins you wanted to submit for certification, but I believe they would be based pretty much along the lines of the ANA guide. Maybe one of the more knowledgeable members could shed a better light on that for us both?

The ANA book has pictures of coins in each of the various grades, which makes it much more user-friendly than the PCGS guide. If you just get one grading book, ANA Grading Standards is definitely the one I'd get. Another one I like is 'Making the Grade' by Beth Deisher. It only covers the "top 25 most widely collected U. S. coins," but it has more and bigger pictures than the ANA guide. You can get these and other grading guides at Amazon. By the way, I think the half dollar is a solid VG-8.

Thanks Dewayne. By the way, you said "not original". What do you mean there?

I can't speak for the original poster, but I think it means the surfaces of the coin or the photo look like they have been worked with to give a coin that will end up being disappointing in hand a chance to sell for way more than it's worth. I can tell by the background who the seller is and for me personally it's a no-brainer--I won't deal with the seller under any circumstances for reasons I've enumerated elsewhere. Quote: One person may grade a coin as an Fine while another one grade it as an Fine+ But what happens when a knowledgeable person grades it VG-8 with some questionable-looking surfaces and realizes it's worth about $12-20? The 1923-S in this condition is not really as rare or costly as the price guides make it out to be. Lower grade ones are still to be found in junk, and higher grade slabbed VGs can be had for less than $30 (check out Teletrade).

Thanks for the input, Half. I can tell you one thing...I am so glad that I found this forum. I can tell it will save me a lot of money and headaches in the long run! The advice and feedback I've had thus far is invaluable to someone fairly wet behind the ears in coin collecting.

I mean that the surfaces of coin looks to have been cleaned in the past. I would advise you to go to a coin show or a coin shop and look at some Walkers that have been cleaned and some that have not. If you buy clean ones now and later want to resale you may lose a lot of money.
