I bought these three at a flea market recently. I regarded them mostly as VF to XF. The problem with copper coins is that it is really difficult to see many problems with them unless you're in a well lit room! It's almost making me want to move away from collecting copper types altogether!

I wanted to get some thoughts on the condition of them. The 1904 seems to have some substance around the "STATES" area. The 1907 obverse has something odd going on above the ear...could that be a die mishap or is it just crud that fused to the surface?

Sorry about the quality of the pics...I am still learning how to deal with lighting issues!

The 04 definitely has verdigras on OBV. I can't tell on the 07 above the ear without lighter picture and closer pic of the region. The coins are all in the VF-XF range, hope you got good flea market type prices!

My local flea market charges 3-4 bucks for Indian cents in G condition. No bargain there!

I will have to get a better shot of the 07.
I suppose I paid what I thought was fair value as I picked up all three for a total of $20 and I was thinking all three fell at or near the XF mark, which would give the combined total a fair market value somewhere in the $22 to $24 range.

But after examining them in decent light (flea markets aren't exactly light friendly) and especially the digital photos of them, I think I probably got hosed by about 5 bones, or so.

Oh well...live and learn. I am just getting back into my IHC collection after putting it on hold for nearly 20 years!

As for the verdigris, can it be removed safely?

The 1897 appaears to be heavily corroded and pitted, the 1904 has verdigis corrision, the third may be OK. Not much can be done on the first two and I always try and avoid any copper coin with that green stuff. That color indicates that the copper in the coin has reacted with another agent like PVC. If cleaned off there will be metal missing from the coin underneath.

That's the other kicker...I am color blind, so green stuff on a copper coin does not jump out to me as it would to other folks!

Hi mycrob,

you need to make a little visit to my flea market here in canada. I bought lots of the Indian Head cents, never paid more than 1.00 for any of them in great conditions. never realized they were even valuable was just buying something american to help me feel less homesick here. Cant believe what the true values turned out to be. I have managed to buy lots of US coins for very cheap prices over the last 2 years.
