Just came across this cool penny. Please let me know why this happened. Is there any worth to it?

These aren't error, but Post Strike Damage, since it was done after it left the U.S. Mint. These are called counterstamps. They do have a slight value over face value, but with that gunky residue, you probably won't get very much for it.

The are called counter punched coins. They are added onto a usually new coin to sell to other collectors.

Different themes are used:

Different events. But pretty much a damaged coin to a real collector.

Nice counterstamps on the front, but the rev still has glue and a bit of the card stock that this was stuck too when it was sold. I don't think much of a premium as we see these pretty often. Worth putting in a 2x2 for nivelty factor though.

Yep. Bicentennial counterstamp. Like Spence mentioned it came on a card. Something like this:

That is weird 1978. I hadn't noticed before. All I've ever seen is 1976. And I've seen a lot of them.

EDIT: Well, I was wrong. I've got some 1975 LMC Bicentennial Counterstamps too. They must have been chomping at the bit to get these stamped for the Bicentennial release.

I also have 20 or so of the cards I posted. If anyone would like one, please PM me.

There are a bunch of Lincoln Cent Counterstamps here:
