I'm thinking Parthian or Sassannian. You may need to post this in ancient.

Welcome! It looks like a silver pfennig (penny) from the 12th-13th century. A number of medieval experts here will look into it and probably be able give a more detailed attribution.

The first side of the coin might show the Holy Roman Emperor, with the globus cruciger (orb + cross) in his left hand and a scepter in his right.
The second side shows a church, with a bishop below, crozer in his right hand.
German imperial cities (Aachen for esample) issued coins with these kinds of images in medieval times.

Quote: It does appear to be a !2th century Pfennig of one of the many city states of that time. If you can match the location found to that state, you can find it here: In fact, it does appear to be Aachen: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces105204.html

Wow.. Aachen indeed it is.. I'm truly impressed by the minds on this board.. You found a needle in a haystack in a matter of min. Mind blown. Thank you all for the helpful insight..
Any ideas what the value of something like this would be? I do enjoy having it in my collection.

I'm not sure if this is exactly the same type, but it sold at auction for 130 euro a few years ago. https://www.numisbids.com/n.php?p=l...308&lot=2319 The condition of the coin you've shown is not a good, so it is likely worth considerably less. Your coin has a wonderful story! I wonder how it got from Aachen to Dusseldorf? One can only imagine.

Thanks.. Yes perhaps I will donate it to the Aachen Coin Club which really loves these. My grandma came from a small town Moechengladbach outside of Dusseldorf.. Not far from Aachen.. probably someone travelled there at some point lost this.. she found it digging in the dirt to plant some flowers.. and it waited 800 years to end up in my hands. crazy if you think of it..

I happen to notice a bit of difference between pic #1 & pic #5 Pic #5 has a whitish look as is appropriate for an antique silver coin Pic #1 ........ not so much I hope someone did not say "let me polish that for you to make it look nice and shiney" This happens more often than thought possible The results can be a form of tragedy
