Maybe it was dipped in acid, causing the rim to get thinner in size?

Actually the coins planchet is not thinner. The rim is missing either by wear, or by flattening. The rim is created by the upset process of changing a blank into a planchet. The forming of the rin is enhanced even more during the striking progress. The metal is forced into shape, the collar makes the reeds on the edge. The rims metal is shaped on the outside of the dies. But it has had a hard life out in the wild . So it has been flattened, reduced with acids and other events. The coin is probably held up good for what it has been through. Just a normal abused coin.

I agree with @coop--just (agressive) wear and tear on this one.

Well the inner layer is copper. The cladding is silver colored. So let me ask you. If you had a fresh grilled cheese sandwich, and you started pressing down on the bread, what would happ? The chees would spread towards the edges, just like the copper did on this dime. The faces on this dime looks as bad as I do, most mornings. So this coin has seen life as at it's worst. It's looking tougher than your MIL when she's not happy. But this coin proves, "I can take it!" Will this coin be kept? I doubt it. But it will be remembered... here.

Good explaination Coop. I'd add, that once the "cheese" got pushed back against the bread it may look all cheese! Here's a clad planchet for ya:
