Hi All!

Picked up this Tetradrachm and was curious about the edge. It seems to have some odd folded lines. Is this normal or is this coin a fake?

Weight 16.4 grams
Size 20.55 mm

Thanks!!

P.S. sorry for photo quality!!

@mj, you know that these are very commonly faked, so knowing your seller is important. This isn't the sort of coin to pick up at a flea market. I can't answer real vs. fake, but the folded over layers on the edge are commonly found on these coins.

Is it possible for you the crop the images so we just see the coin. The coin appears genuine but better pictres are needed to say for sure.

This edge is normal for a tetradrachm after 355 BC , but your reverse is a nice second half 5th century reverse .Need better images of the obverse . albert

Albert, I thought so too, but here are a few 4th century BC profile eye Attica tets with somewhat similar reverses, all with the "A" up at the height of the owl's head (a rare occurrence, it would seem) and the first two with stubby tail feathers.

Thank you for the responses so far. I know they are commonly faked, hence my question. I will post better quality pictures as soon as I get home.

The last tetradrachms with the A up at the height of the owl's head were struck 390/380 BC in Athens ,still this model was still used in Asia for making imitations (Artaxerxes,Mazakes..).For a beautiful coin of this style :https://www.vcoins.com/en/stores/nu...Default.aspx
For the coin of MJ , I think it has been found in Syria , because one of the countermarks (at right) has been found on coins from the 1989 Syria hoard . To make a better attribution, we need better images of the coin . albert
