They were probably running them until the dies cracked. By order of management of course.

Chafemasterj, that's what I was thinking as well. Although, there's no Die Cracks yey, even though there's severe Die Deterioration (die wear) going on. I actually wonder, when they retired that poor overworked die. Lol!

Edit: Chafemasterj, have you seen Die Deterioration this extreme before?

Cannot say that I have. I think few dies make it that long.

Chafemasterj, I had the feeling that you haven't seen one that extreme before, until now. Definitely a very interesting conversation piece!

Coop, that was a very funny joke! Good one Coop!

I put this LMC in a 2x2 coin flip and wrote "1982 P Large Date LMC with severe Die Deterioration!" on the paper in the flip. It's now in my errors and varieties collection album. I used my cheap 20 dollar phone to take pictures of this, so they're kinda blurry, even when the camera is in-focus.

Bate, that coin you posted is not the result of Die Deterioration. It's a Dryer Coin. That's why it looks like that.

Bate: Does the reverse look normal on the above coin? If so it might be a struck through a deteriorating die cap, or be suffering from a Struck Through Grease issue. (This is not the first coin of the thread is it?)

Coop, you're correct. It's not the first coin of the thread. Bate and Coop, you have my permission to discuss about Bate's coin on my thread. I'm fine and cool with it. It will be a teaching moment as well.

I have now made an educational image of this for educational purposes. Feel free to save this image for personal use. It's about severe Die Deterioration. I explain how it happens.
