Bought this 1863 Indian Head cent from a local coin dealer today for just $25. He labeled it as VF with 3 diamonds but I believe that is extremely undergraded and actually has 4 visible diamonds. What do you think the real grade is? It does have slight mint luster, more so on the reverse than the obverse.

EF, details, cleaned.

While I certainly agree that the technical grade is near 40, the obvious wipe would not pass a TPG without a detail.

However, I still like it very much and I consider the price to be fair.

How can you tell if it's cleaned? Is it the color? I thought the color was weird until I realized it was copper-nickel and that the color might be a bit different from what I'm used to (This is my first CuNi).

My lighting is not the best so I posted new pics. Does it still look cleaned, or was it my lighting?

Doesn't particularly appear cleaned in the new pics. Could we have a close-up of those weak first couple of letters in Liberty?

The LI is nearly gone but still noticeable. Not sure if it's wear or just weakly struck.

Some grease in the die probably. Certainly EF if not AU sharpness, but that soft spot is a slight valuation negative on such a common date.

I don't think it's cleaned, too much crud left in the letters and between the wreath and rim.
