Just yesterday I picked up the coin attached below from a "grab bag" of ancient coins at one the shops that I frequent.

Something about the coin intrigued me .
From checking the web it appears to be an Abbasid Dirham.
Maybe it is from the time of Harun al-Rashid, of the 1001 Arabian Nights.
The diameter of the coin is about 23-24 mm

Any assistance in further identification would be much appreciated

Squire

Thanks a lot Kushanshah

I am constantly amazed at the incredible knowledge on the Coin Community Forum.

My knowledge of the Arabic script is very limited so having CCF members fluent in the language and knowledgable in the associated history is really invaluable.

PS. maybe I will send the coin to my mum. She always read me stories when I was a little boy, including those from the 1001 Arabian Nights. Therefore a little "thank you" from out of the times of the 1001 Arabian Nights may be appropriate.
Rest in Peace

Wonderful story. I'm sure your mom would me amazed.

Most non-collectors, as you probably know, think any ancient coin must be worth big bucks.

I'm also sure that wouldn't be the reason she would treasure her gift.

Obviously if you are so considerate, she raised you right.

Thanks Moxking

I think for most people, their mother is "the best mum in the world".
But I think it is important to acknowledge this in deed on a regular basis.
Because that is the right thing to do.
I think it is easy to incorporate nostalgia and historical romance (in the traditional sense) with the appropriate ancient coin.
Maybe I will include the coin within a book of the 1001 Arabian Nights. That would "round out" the story.
