Ok guys I am a newbie with a question
I use the RedBook for coin values
and I am writing concerning the 2000 silver proof quarter 5 piece set
it lists 14.00 originally sold for 13.95 It is the cheapest of the quarter sets and is listed at less than its bullion value it has been the same price since last year
even as singles they book at 8.00 each
silver is now around 17.50
but even at 16.70 its worth 15.03
even the 2005 silver quarter set there are more sets and it is values at 20.00
Do you think this is a screwup by RedBook or is there something I dont know or am not considering?
any thoughts would help

It's been said here often......IGNORE THE PRICES LISTED IN RedBook OR BLUEBOOK!....
These books are only useful for the information that they contain concerning mintage numbers, listing of varieties, listing of grades, and general information.....
And any book that goes to print as early as RedBook......for instance, the 2009 RedBook was out in April of this year 2008 right ?.....So how could Silver prices be accurate ?...or Gold prices ?......precious metals can be a "rollercoaster ride" !
The RedBook has very "over-inflated" values to most of their listings generally ALL OF THE TIME.
There are some "Numismatic Weekly" publications or "Numismedia Price Guides" that you can seek out for a more "realistic" idea as to the value of your coins.
5- 90% silver qtrs being priced different from one year to the next can be several factors.....mintage numbers is what I'd look at first. But as the price of Silver goes up, so does the cost of the "Silver Proof Set" too ! That might be a factor at to the discrepancy. And the RedBook did have some wrong information last year I believe......so could be....

Prices are only accurate when the writer sends it to the prices. By the time the book gets published, prices would have changed. Because prices move on a daily basis, it's just difficult to predict what tomorrow's prices would be like and this does apply to coins although the prices may not move as wildly as bullion prices.

Welcome to the forum! Your first question here was important. Be frugal with your cash and buy what you like. You can't go wrong. Well, unless you buy chocolate coins.

I am looking at the RedBook now and as long as I am reading this right, the $14 refers to the non-silver quarter proof set. The silver quarter sets don't seem to have been available as a seperate purchase until 2004. They were only available in 2000 as part of the silver 10-piece proof set and that entire set is in the $30-35 range across all my price guides.
