Unlike your 1606 thaler that SuperDave commented on, this coin has a super strike which really brings out the intricate detail of the design. That extra 100 years of minting technology really upgraded the production quality!

This coin has no obvious luster and there is definite friction on the high points, like the obverse hair curls and the reverse rivets or bosses (or whatever you call those 12 circular design elements). Detail-wise it rivals many US coins that grade AU, but the lack of luster drops it into EF territory IMO. I'd give it an EF-45.

A wonderful coin!

There is something about cartwheels that speaks to me on a gut level, be they Morgans or 17th-Century Thalers. The sheer size allows the artist to fully develop designs, and I truly think that Austria and Germany reached a level in the 17th and 18th Centuries which hasn't been duplicated since. Your posts here, Zohar, tend to bear out my belief. I could just sit here and stare at coins like this.

I think NGC called this one AU-55, maybe 58. I agree with Jaobler's technical opinion, but NGC has been....enthusiastic about World coin grades before.

My (biased) view is that this is higher than EF grade and I guess I have the benefit of having the coin here. Thanks for the valuable input.

That is certainly an AU 55.
