I have some Buffalo nickels that I have had for about 35 years or so. One of them has what you could call an axe blade sticking out of the back of the buffalo, (at the top), the other side has an indention in the same spot. At first I thought someone had hit it with something, but the backside axe part is too smooth and looks as if it is part of the nickel. I haven't been able to find one like it online, just curious as to what happened to it, could it have happened during minting? If so, has anyone seen or know of another one? Is it worth anything?

It's most likely damage, but a picture would help.

I'm thinking it's a foreign-object strikethrough. Something ended up sitting on the reverse die (which is usually the bottom die), something like a long thin strip with a pointed end which poked into what would have been the obverse strike. It prevented any strike at all on the "axe-handle" part of the reverse, although it was thin enough to allow a decent strike right next to it on the reverse, and I'd guess the obverse as a result is very weakly struck because it was strong enough to prevent the dies from coming together completely. The strikethrough reaches all the way to the leg on the reverse, but there's still detail on the opposite face, which makes me think it was thin, strong, and only pointed at the one end near the rim.
Rest in Peace

I only see post strike damage done while the coin still was in circulation putting a smooth wear on it.

The part coming out of the back is sticking out, not smoothed down. It starts even with the buffalo back and arches to the edge covering the letters. It is higher than the letters.

Looks post mint to me when the coin was a higher grade then, circulation wear caused the reverse "bulge" to wear down to the current grade. Looks like a Good 04/06.
