Proof cents. Red, Cameo and Deep Cameo? What does that mean? (Reading this top line, think of Jeff Dunham's Bubba J. Then you will have it. LOL) We often hear people sending in coins to be graded. Most of us just roll their eyes and wonder why. Sometimes it is beneficial to have a coin graded. A few of the classics you would probably never buy unless it was graded. 1909-S VDB, 1955 DDO, (the big one) 1971-S DDO proof coins and on and on. But sometimes a better grade is desired. Some collect Full bands on Mercury dimes, others full bell lines, full steps. and the list goes on. Well that is not me. But something to learn a bit more about is one of my favorites. The proof cents from the 1960's. I love searching through these. I buy them in the cello and they look sweet. Sometimes have a little color from the cello. Same with proof nickels which are usually even cheaper. But I was looking through the PCGS images and noticed the Red proofs, the Cameo proofs and the Deep cameo Proofs. So I found some nice images and devices to make a thread about these. So here we go. As usual a small read and a few images to fill in the show and tell section of the thread. Enjoy: Proof Deep Cameo: Proof Cameo: Proof Red cents: Again, these need to have the proof look on both sides of the coin in order to be graded as a Cameo or Deep Cameo. Usually the Memorial is missing the cameo on these during the early 1960's. Later on all the coins have the Cameo them all. So it is just the pre ones that will have a premium. Not sure how much? Check auctions, websites that sell coins and the grading companies. They will give you an idea if they are worth messing with or not.

How do I come up with this stuff. I do a lot of searching and see something in an image that needs to be looked at. Then I make a theme, images and create the post on word. (Fixes my spellin' gooder that way) Then add the images and all the links. Then post it all in one shot. Boom, it done. Just check the preview and then post. Your done.

Excellent information, have a question for you, do you remove them from the cello and if so how do you then store them?

I remove all coins from the cello. They tend to color them more in time. But I'm looking for varieties, not for storage. If I find a doubled die, then I put it in a 2X2, then put the Proof cents into a tube. Here is a toned one I found in the last batch: I just buy the roll, (50 Proof cents) and they send them in the cello. I don't buy sets.

Good thread. After searching for varieties, do you ever separate cameo and deep cameo examples from the rest?

Most of the ones I get are still in cello, so they have already been checked for cameo coins. But I'm a variety searcher. In my last shipment, some of the proof cent cellos were punctured and the proof cents had changed to a gold color. Similar to the one I posted above, but that one was more white in color. These are gold with brown spots on them. Been through several of them so far. Mostly DDOs on the date of the 1962 proof cents.
