Well I finally have a night to go through my purchases this year (wife and kids went to Grandma's)and have a dilemma. I have a 1960 lead sealed bag of 1960P cents. The tag on the bag is dated 3/10/1960. For those who don't know here is a little back ground- in 1960 there are 2 kinds of dates, small and large. The small dates are believed to have been minted in the beginning of the year, most likely January as production was halted in February. The mint started production back up in March. I do not know when in March they started back up. There are 3 possibilities here, I either have a bag of small dates, a bag of large dates that were some of the first minted with the new dies, or a mixed bag. Now the dilemma, do you open the bag to find out what is inside? Do you hold on to it and sell it later (I got a really good deal on it). I know if I put it on ebay I could easily double my money if not more, if I open it and find all small dates I hit the jackpot. If I open it and find all large dates I break even or even lose a little.   Edited by chrsb

I say open it as well. Without opening it and seeing what's inside, it's just a paper weight.

Wow, this is a very convieniant topic for me. I myself just purchased for cheap cheap a BU roll of 1960P's hoping for a small date. Sadly, non in the roll.
But I do believe I found a 1960 small date in circulation, but am only about 85% sure without a second opinion.
I would open the bag myself. Its either hit it big or break even. Depends whether you want to make money off this bag or not.

Well the date on the tag show 3/10/60 but the good thing about it is that the tag is from the bank not the mint. I think you have pretty good odds of getting lucky and finding small dates in there. If it was me I would just put it away and open it at a later date. I love the mystery. I have a mint sewn $100 bag of 79-S SBA's and I have had it for 5 years and haven't opened it yet to see if they are either filled or clear "S" |

Open it. You're just giving whatever coins that are inside bag marks from hauling the thing around.

I would never open it, I am one of those guys that would rather sell it sealed for the what if factor than sell it opened and leave no doubt what it is

Well here it is-  Looks like large date to me, of course I have not gone through them all yet, just took out around 50. I figured I did not buy it as an investment, or any of my other Lincolns for that matter. I am sure with the proper listing I could have tripled my investment (paid $200 for those wondering). I figure I will pull them out 50 at a time and put them in tubes. |

wow, 200 dollars for 50 dollars worth of 1960's unc.
you weren't kidding when you said you got a nice deal, well, at least it sounds like a nice deal to me. You could probably roll those and break even on the price if you want to go through all that trouble.
Oh, by the way, that looks like a large date to me, but like I said before I'm not sure about telling the differences. How it the world do you take such a nice picture?

That is definately a large date, here are pics of a large and small date. Top pic is a Large date. Bottom pic is a Small date   |
