Saw this coin while browsing and thought it looked a bit off but I have almost no knowledge on these and would appreciate some opinions. Appears to be similar to RIC I 376, seller states 24.5mm and 8 grams in weight which seems underweight for an as, and too small for a dupondius.

Cannot tell if it is orichalcum, copper, or cleaned.

I agree ..... it looks to be a copper as that got the 3rd degree 'deep' cleaning
A few years buried in a pumpkin patch (plenty of fertilizer) and it might get some health benefits
Think of it like one of those Hungarian "prophylactic" mineral mud baths

I think it is overpriced, so I won't be buying it, but I am trying to learn how to differentiate on the Republic era coinage between fakes and not-fakes so this is very helpful information!

It looks a bit "rubbed" ie polished too
I would not spend more than $30-40 on it at best
Iffin I was of a mind that is
The early moneyers series were not famous for the portraiture nor the overall quality of the product
Frequently the legends run off the strikes uneven, and the coins rather worn with low relief
This one has a fairly decent portrait

Seller is asking $40 which I think $25 might be my top end.

Not a ridiculous asking price
But I think with patience you might do better
My advice is to watch and wait for 'Mr Right' to come along

I found this one last week
It set me back approximately $47
I like it because it appears to have sharp legends a nice olive green patination and a good portrait (3 out of 3 !)
Not only that but I see some 'schmutz' that probably will be removable without any extreme measures.

Ancient coins are sometimes batch cleaned in a rock tumbler with walnut shells or other gentle abrasive. They come out with a lightly polished look like the op coin.

Yes, I am definitely holding out for more original coins, even if they are a bit crusty :) I don't like the heavily cleaned/overpolished, much rather have natural patina.
