I found this penny . 1987 with a melted dot. next to number 7. just for educational purposes. What could be the reason of this. Thanks

Could be a die chip, but I guess for US cents minted since 1982 (i.e. with copper plating and a zinc core), I'm always a bit suspicious that round defects like this aren't simply a hole in the plating where the underlying zinc is starting to deteriorate.

I can't tell if it's a Die Chip on the 7, or if it's Zinc Rot setting in.
