I am about to lay out some money for supplies I am looking at a scale.
What is the upper limit I need in weight? 500 grams 1000 or more? Does it need to be more accurate than 0.1 grams or does it need to measure 0.01 grams.
what scales do any of you have.
Is this a good investment for a collection- If I shop wisely
Read the book, get the supplies buy the coin

I definitely think a scale is a good purchase. It seems to me that you have just the right idea...books then supplies then coins.

Thanks for the qudos But if we are to all learn we need to discuss brand, features etc. There are both amateurs and professionals on this forum. What works for one may not work for another.

I used OHAUS scales in the precious metal business. They weigh in grams, troy ownces, avdp ounces, and penny weights to a tenth and hundredth of the unit. Very reliable. Been around for years! http://www.ohaus.com/

Depends on their model. Go to their web site. They have a variety to choose from. Their max weight on some models can go up to 32,000 grams, so the choice is yours.

I use the pocket Acculab. It's got 250grm capacity. It's also extremly sensitive, so much, I really have to wonder about carrying it in the pocket while walking around at coin shows. Even though it's very easy to calibrate it also doesn't take much, at least on mine, to lose the calibration. It will also do troy weight and I believe diamond weight. I like it. It's easy to work with and I never weight anything heavier than 1 oz silver bar or military token anyway and the tokens usually don't weight in more than 6 grms.
