Hi Everyone...
I am wondering what the approximate value of a British Guinea from the 1700's is.. I have posted a picture of the coin which was found on a farm in North Carolina.. Any help or other info about the coin would be appreciated..
Thanks,
Ed

G'day, that looks like the real deal.
8.4 grams of 91.7% gold.
It's value in that era and thereafter was 21 shillings.
The last guinea was minted in 1813.
In 1817, the "Sovereign" was introduced: 7.98 grams; valued at 20 shillings; which coincided with the value of one pound, which was the unit of account.

At some earlier point in history, the guinea had a value other than 21 shillings, but I can't recall the details, and I don't believe that it relates to your lovely coin, so I won't look it up.

Just a small point: without a scale in your pic, I can't tell what diameter your coin is. A full guinea was about 23mm. There were also halves, thirds, and quarters. The fractionals aren't often on the market, so they fetch a good price.

Yep, this one looks like the real thing. There were an awful lot of "lookalike" brass fake guineas made, but the legends on this one are good.

That's a nickel behind it, to scale? Then this is actually a half-guinea. 1756 isn't a scarce date, but all guineas are still worth over bullion value, unless they're very badly worn or damaged. AGW is 0.123 ounces, so BV is $114 right now. I'd grade this one Fine, so you'd probably add $50 to $100 on top of that for this coin.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

Hey,
Thanks for the replies.. This coin is exactly the size of the nickel that is in the picture.. So it is about 20mm.. Does that mean that it is a half-guinea?

If it is 20mm in size it is a Half Guinea, weighs approx 4.2g Value approx £200 for FINE and £450 for VF prices in GB pounds.
