 The quarters d mint mark is not where it's supposed to be its on the e at the top. Is this real or did someone stamp a d in it and what might the value be?

Sorry I can't it's too shiny but try to look at the E in states and the d mint mark there were it's not ment to be

In person or looks like the mint mark D is on top of the E in states, but I'm not sure. I saw that PCGS has a 1962 d rpm where the re are two d mm and one is in a similar place as mine. Do you think the person punching the mint mark into the working die could have misplaced it that badly?

Welcome to the Community! I see what you think could be a "D" at the top but it is most likely some sort of post mint damage or maybe was struck from a Grease Filled Die. Mint marks back then were punched in by hand and they wouldn't miss by that much. If so, it would have been discovered a long time ago I would think. Others may have a different opinion. |

It looks a lot like a mint mark and in 1962 there was a similar error and the coin is in otherwise perfect shape so I dont think it's PMD unless someone punched a d into it. Do you know how much it would be worth it it was a die chip or Struck Through Grease? |

Also the guy at the coin store I got it from said he bought it from an old lady who had an entire uncirculated roll of 1962 quarters that she sold the store for spot price

There is no way that is a mintmark. It may be a die chip. It may be damage. I can't tell without a clear closeup of that area in STATES. Quote:

Would it be worth it to get it graded and see what NGC/PCGS think?

No, it would be a waste of money, if you can try to take closer pics we can try and help you pinpoint exactly what it could be but its not going to affect the value of it by a significant amount, especially not one enough to justify the cost of grading it.

As stated. IT IS NOT A MINTMARK, period. And as stated, better pics necessary to give accurate assessment, period. Possibilities of it being a manufactured die error are zero. Possibilities of o die strike error are slim, but possible. Strike errors are worth very little to add aspremium if any at all. MS 64 1962P quarters are worth no more than $8-10...on a good day, too plentiful in those mid grades.

After looking closer at the area of concern, it looks like it possibly could have taken a hit. Look at the E & S to see how they are misshapen. Also might be a die chip. No possibility of it being a MM. In either case, there is no extra value.  |
