When I was little my dad gave me a bunch of coins from various countries including this one. This is really the only one I have never been able to ID and I was hoping someone out there could shed some light on it. Unfortunately it is pretty well worn but I am guessing it is from early 20th century possibly Middle East or Turkey? Image: coin1.jpg52.6 KB Image: coin2.jpg53.05 KB

Try (131231) Not Allowed - Auto-Removed They have a picture identifier that might help you out. Without doing a thorough comparison, it looks like it may be from Egypt. Hope this helps out.

This seems Egypt 10 qirsh KM#295 to me, struck in the 22th year of reign of Abdul Hamid II (year of accession to the throne is 1293AH or 1876AD). So your coin was issued in 1897.

I am by far not the best of persons to ask regarding arabic coins. I would concur that this is Egyptian Ottoman, but I would have said regnal year was 32, not 22. Agree, disagree?

Interesting...so Elle you are thinking more like 1907 rather than 1897? I will be glad to get this mystery solved so I can plunk it back into my world collection with some sort of ID to tag it!

Yes, I'd still say 1907 instead of 1897. The reverse of the coin is pictured upside down, but there is clearly the arabic numeral 3 with the extra little dip in it, then the numeral 2. Definately KM 295. :)

I agree with ElleKitty. I am afraid I didn't look too careful at the date: it is indeed regnal year 32. This coin was struck at the Heaton mint in Birmingham.

Given the condition of the coin, and not knowing much about Egyptian coins in general, I am assuming that the value of it is not more than a few bucks at the most?

It does have some silver content, but no; it wouldn't command an earth-shattering price. It's .833 Silver, giving it .3749 ASW. Probably $8-10.

That's actually more than I figured! Well, I thought that it was probably just worth the metal content at best. I have no plans on selling it anyway.
