I have a handful of scrap silver electrical contacts (from relays, high voltage circuit breakers etc) of unknown purity with some being mixed with tungsten and some still soldered to copper components.

I am curious what refiners out there will assay what I have and instead of cash, pay in bullion or melt what I have and give back minus fee. I know it's not a lot but not sure what to do with it at this point. I want something to put away for the boys for when they get older and these are not doing any good in my garage.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

I guess the question is if you have enough in weight to make it worth it. My hunch is that, unless you refine it yourself, it will not be worth the trouble.

First off any scrap whether copper or PM's pay more if it is cleaned, all foreign material removed. The copper will be one price and if the other is silver it will be another as will the tungsten. It does sound like you don't have the weight to make it worth it either for you or a refiner. You will be better served to check your local scrap yards. And see if they will take it again the weight may be to low for them to bother with and they may only take it as the base metals. Considering that silver is on the low side for known purity. you can google electrical components and see what the scarp is going for.

I've read about and watched videos on the subject of purifying the silver and am totally comfortable doing it but getting sulfuric acid is obviously tricky. I guess I could always put it up on ebay as a lot.

Unless you are talking POUNDS of such scrap, most refiners would have no time for a smaller amount.

Listing it on ebay and needing to ship it with a Priority Mail box, then paying ebay, then paying Pay Pal, and finally having what is left over also won't yield much. Unless - again - you have POUNDS of scrap with plenty of silver.

If all you have is a 12"x12" box of the stuff, you should just take it to the local metal scrap/reclaimer and get a flat base metals fee. Like the others have said, you may have 4 pounds of scrap and only be able to refine to a 90% purity about 10-14oz of saleable metals the rest will slag and be virtually worthless. You see, of all you have, there are many other elements added to make each alloy, of which these trace elements really make up the bulk weight. I can't remember what I used to get for burned off copper telephone cable/wire, but it was no where near a per pound rate of going PM prices because altho it was "copper" wire, most wasn't "pure" enough to rate the top dollar.
