Hi
A friend has asked me to move this for him. Morgans are not my specialty. I need help with grade and what I might expect it to go for.

I would probably grade it a VF-20 (maybe less) and it might go for around $20. I'm not a pro, but I'm pretty sure that I see quite a few hairlines.

Looking at it in hand I don't see the hairlines that you are talking about. The toning is not the easiest to see through. the latest grey sheet I have which is last December lists this in VF-20 as $180 ask. I suspect the grade may be somewhere north of VF

I'm not a Morgan expert but I would say at least VF30. May have a chance for a low EF although toning makes some details hard to make out.

I think this will go XF, just a little overall wear on the highest points of the hair and eagle's breast and the leaves on the wreath. Just a bit too much wear for AU

Around XF.

Coinwhiz, it's an 1899P, which is pretty uncommon. Not an 1899O

Its part of a lot of coins that a friend has to move because they belong to his mother and she needs money for medical expenses. Most of the stuff is just junk silver but there are a few that are worth auctioning off. I will et what the market will bear and all goes to them I am not charging any fees, it is a friend after all.

If you want to link to auctions, I would not mind taking a look.

Oops, I just doubled checked my books, and an 1899 Morgan dollar in VF-20 is worth anywhere from $125-$180. Congratulations! You have a fairly valuable coin!

It is not listed anywhere at the present as I was trying to get a feel for the potential value first

I'm thinking high AU to be honest. I think the "toning" is masking a coin that is almost MS. I think Seatednut is on the right track. The only reason I don't think it's MS is because of the way the toning evens out on the cheek and above the eyeto a flat gray. Otherwise, I don't see much variation in the toning in general. Above the ear seems to look fine to me honestly, as does the eagles breast. Hmmm, I stink at this game though.

Maybe some more Morgan experts besides Seated will chime in. Superdave, Bryan, Becky, et al.....

Tights24,

Thanks for the endorsement. I settled on XF due to the flatness of the hair and lack of any detail of breast feathers. On an AU coin I should be able to see the hair lines on the high points of the design. I nicked Ziggy's pic to highlight those areas on the obverse where the details are too worn for AU.

Here is a MS64 Morgan close up, which is why I thought this may not be wear per se, but the toning makes it look so. I would think there would be more difference in the toning pattern if it were true rub ya know. Hmmmph, don't know. Good debate though. I would love this one to be sent in just to see....

Tights24,

What year is the MS64? The 99P isn't known as a weak strike date. Also, you can see the dimples on the cotton boles on your example. I can't on Ziggy's.

Doah, it is a 1903 from Heritage in an NGC slab. I thought I typed in 1899. For what it's worth, I do see an 1899 that has almost the same weakness. I just think the toning is hiding an AU coin is all.

Welp, I don't mean to hijack your thread Ziggy, but I am learning more of the intricasies of grading this way. Thanks for the sample!!
