Just wondering if anybody has an idea on what this error is? It is raised above the field. A piece of debris that got struck into the copper plating was my thought?

Interesting, It doesn't look typical of a Retained Cud, is it raised or incuse?

If it were a strike through I would think that whatever it struck through would carry over onto the rim, but it stops at the rim, unless it has really good placement

Slightly raised - and flat, not roundish like a gas bubble.

And no, it isn't gunk, it's part of the coin

If that's the case, then it could of been possibly Struck Through.

OK, thanks David. I was gonna go with coop's "copper worm" suggestion but.............

If it is raised on the coin then it can't be a strike through. The die must be damaged in some way.

I was gonna say the same thing. If you look at Abe there's not much detail left. Looks like it's been polished pretty good already. Maybe some kind if die dent. I'm assuming they take the dies out to polish them? I'm not too familiar with the new techniques.

Good thought about trying to polish out a die dent - maybe that's why it fades out at both ends?

I'm not liking my die dent theory. The "side walls" if you will, are raised? But the middle part is flat, is that right? If that's the case then prob not a dent or gouge. The whole thing should be raised then. Maybe it got pinched or grabbed by something and cut some lines into it and then some zinc rot started setting in the cuts and gave them a slightly raised appearance. Or something was on the coin and the same thing happened. Finally, my third theory is immediately after plating there was an elongated plating bubble. Another coin hit the bubble dead center and the piece that was hit still stuck to the planchet and the rest of the bubble split and corroded over time. You can see some serious zinc rot on the sides of the coin and it's obviously been on an adventure so what started out as a plating bubble ended up in this state.

Mike Diamond is gonna be like "it got stuck in a Coke machine" no premium. It's safe to spend. Which regardless of what the issue is, is what the final verdict will be...still very diff. Not something you see every day

Just a thought; The planchet is punched out of a rolled sheet of zinc. Lamination should be possible prior to plating. I wonder what that would look like. Could this be an example of sub plating lamination?
