Hi,
I had this posted in a different forum for world coins and am now hoping I will get more info in the canadian forum instead. I need to know if this coin is large 9's or small 9's for sure. Since the value between the two types is so vastly different I am worried at assigning it the wrong type. Also it would be helpful if someone could tell me how I can tell the difference? PLease, Please HELP!

This is the Large 99 variety. As I understand it, the Small 99 variety is also the Hooked 99 variety.

Actually, I stand to be corrected. The "Small 99" is the same size as the Large 99. The difference is that the Small 99 is slightly bold, resulting in smaller o's in each 9. Its a subtle difference.

So if that is the case that it isn't a hooked 9 to be small date is there any easy way to tell the difference. I have looked at pictures of small nines and large nines and they all look the same to me.

malissadawn..No.. I don't think there is any easy way to tell.

In the Charlton book, the small 99, and the large 99 is pretty hard to tell the difference.

I have one just like yours, but I called it the large 99s, they seem to be a little longer than the small 99s.

Hope this helps some.

THANKS. I find this one coin so frustrating!! TO have a variation that no one can see seems almost insane. Who was the guy with super human eyesight that noticed the difference in the first place? lol

Yeah1 I agree

If you had the two coins together, you could probably tell better.

Yes, mkb.. Thanks, for posting the image, you can see that the large 99s has bigger 0s in the 9s and also the 8s.

and, like I said, the 9s seem somewhat longer.

thanks for the picture. That helps me somewhat but I still dont see a lot of difference. I may just have to stick with large nines verdict to be on the safe side. thanks for the help and info everyone

I vote for the large '9's
The o in large 9's is round versus oblong

Based solely on the above info, looking at the images I would vote large.

The coin imaged in your post is the Large 9 variety. I am no expert on this series but the tails of the 9s on the large variety are thinner and rounded on the ends with a wider gap than the small variety. The difference is small and subtle but fairly clear one you have seen enough coins. Try telling the difference between a small and large motto 1864 US 2 Cent without holding the two varieties side by side. For me its easy I have studied hundreds but even dealers get confused sometimes....
