While CRH I found this 1985 D Lincoln Cent with what appears to be an RPM. The problem is that there is corrosion...Is it a RPM? Also, would anyone know of a way to clean this coin to get a better idea of what is going on? As always, thank you for your help.

It's not rot, I don't think, there is metal there. I was trying to clean it a bit with a toothpick, and there is a metal ridge. Does rot make a ridge? Heck I don't know...thanks though.

Zinc rot can push the copper plating up and form a ridge like that. Just zinc rot, not a RPM.

During the strike the copper plating gets split, then the zinc underneath get oxygen and it all down hill from there:

This happens quite a bit. It's very common.

It's zinc rot. Spend it before it turns into a discombobulated piece of metal.

My apologies...I didn't realize it could push metal up...THAT'S CRAZY!!. I might keep it as a science experiment, and see how bad it can get. Thanks again!
