I live in the Phoenix area and when I moved here I figured that I would see an occasional Mexican coin in circulation due to the proximity to the border. That has not been the case! I see Canadian coins often since there are a lot of snowbirds here and the coins are similar in size and value.

One of the areas popular with American tourists is Rocky Point, a beach resort area in Sonora about 120 miles from me. There a few other border areas that I could get to as well.

Would one be able to get rolls of coins from a Mexican bank in these areas, preferably in exchange for US dollars? Do they even use coin rolls in Mexico?

I like circulation coins from various countries, and know I am not going to be digging out old silver etc. but I do like to get some quantities of current coinage...

One USD is almost 19 Mexican ones, why would you think anyone would take Mexican money over a USD in a place where they probably look to weed it out the most?

It isn't he exchange rate, it is the coin size and similarity that matters when receiving in change. I figured there would be at least one or two coins close enough in size to American coinage to be found in change here, such as I have seen with Canadian and the occasional Euro cent, or even some other countries' coins.

Most people do not consider exchange rate when it comes to coins in change. If it is close enough in size and appearance they use it. It is just people like us who examine every coin we get that are the outliers.

I think it would be hard to confuse any currently circulating Mexican coin with a US one. The one peso and up are bimetallic, the 50 centavos has that "ruffled" edge, and smaller coins than that are hardly used any more.

What about my actual question? The availability of rolled coins in banks in the various tourist areas?

I tried the Mexico roll hunt a few years ago, probably closer to 10 years ago, in TJ. The teller(s) thought I was nuts. My buddy who is fluent explained, but no luck. Maybe a bank further interior. You can buy bags of current Mexican coins at less than face value on ebay.
