It looks to be an 1839 Large Cent. Not 1889. They stopped making Large Cents in 1857 and that type of obverse you have was last used in 1839. Can't tell what else is going on as the coin is in too bad of a shape.

Not an 8/7. This is an 1839 Large Cent, not an 1888 Indian Head Small Cent. to the CCF!

As they mentioned it is an 1839 large cent. There is an overdate that year but this isn't it. (The 1839/6 has plain hair cords, this has beaded cords) There are five different head types for this year, Head of 36 (the plain cords) Head of 38, Silly head, Booby head, and Head of 1840. This is either a Head of 38, or a Silly Head, I'm not sure which because the top of the head is cut off in the image. There are two varieties for the head of 38 and two for the silly head, all four varieties are common.

Well egg on my face, it's not an 1839. I'm now thinking 1833 N-6. The extremely round point of the bust and star 6 ponting slightly left of the tip of the coronet eliminates all of the 1839's. The round bust point eliminates 1838, 1830 is out because none of those have star 6 pointing left of the coronet. That leave 1833 (and in the last picture the date DOES look like 1833) three varieties have star 6 pointing to the left N-1,2, and 6. The hair curl below the bust is too far left over the date to be N-1 and the first start is too close to the bust to be N-2. Got a picture of the reverse?

If I was to clean the one cent coin would that be a bad thing or would it not matter

Rev matches that of 1833 N-6 as well.
