Ok I know everyone is sick of not finding this unicorn. I am very new to this hobby/lifestyle and I am fascinated by all these errors and varities, but my eyes seem to decieve me when it comes to this small date penny. So I turn to you, the community in which I find myself wanting to become an active member. Is either of these the elusive coin in question? I just can't tell with my novice eyes. I don't know if the photos uploaded guess we'll see

Start an educational file and save these images. It will save you from looking for them on the forum. If you don't want to save the images, the click on the address and save that in a word file with a note to remember what the link is for. Your choice. It easy being you are new to start to word page with link addresses, images save them to save image page or copy the information and images and post them to a word page. (From the word page you can't open the images, but you will probably be able to see them). So you have several choices.
Welcome aboard.

Looks like your coin is a large date copper.

To CCF! This is a Large Date, not a Small Date Cent.

They are 2 different coins. And to my untrained eye they both appear different. That's why I'm reaching out to the community in helps to maybe see if I am as blind as my wife says. Thanks for the input and those photos they will hopefully help me in future searches.

to the CCF!

As stated your coin is a Lg. Date. Once you see an actual small date coin in your hand you will know it. The difference isn't that subtle.

Keep searching though. Someone will find another one one of these days.

The 2nd pic could be a SD but it's hard for me to tell with it being so far away from the date. Try to get a close up. 82's are usually pretty easy to tell apart. Is the 2 straight or curvy? (Look at the first pics on Coop's post.) Then you need to weigh it to tell whether it is copper or zinc.

Based on what I can see with my old eyes, I'm gonna say it's probably a LD copper.

It really depends on where you live.. I see quite a few 1982D Sm date zincs here in Montana. It is the 1982p Small date coppers that are rare around here. Heck for every 100 Denver minted cents I get I might see 5 Philly cents and most of those are in horrible condition.
