Bacchus, I don't really care for that one or the price. Maybe I'll find a different one.

Litotes, any photos? I need to start getting some ideas.

"Gold Coins of the World", by Robert Friedberg

Just out of curiosity, is this the same Robert Friedberg that wrote the paper money books?

The youngest of these: The Swiss, from 1921.

That's a good period to collect Swiss gold, versus the issues around WWII, which I find a bit unsettling (due to gold sources)

Amazon, I dropped by that dealer and came up empty-handed. I guess I just need to catch him on the right day.

I was buying foreign gold on occasion, until the spot price went too high. Now adding to that collection is a low priority. Still, it's a fascinating project if you choose to spend your available coin bucks in that area. In my experience most common world gold coins are available for maybe 10-25% over melt.

My world gold collection includes one gold coin each from:
Argentina
Australia
Canada
Chile
Hungary
The Netherlands
Peru
Russia
Sweden
Spain
Uruguay

I don't particularly look for gold coins (too expensive) but I do have a 1/4 koula from Tonga because of my OFEC collection. Oh and a 1963 sovereign for my birth year collection.

Good luck with the collection, I hope you have somewhere very safe for them, but will still get to look at them occasionally!

"Some countries have never issued a gold coin. Ireland, for example."

Ireland has issued several gold coins; the most recent one is the Skellig Michael €20 piece. Not for circulation, sure, but then there are many others that should not be counted either ...
