I have an 1862 Indian Head penny that is of unusual color and quite damaged. I am wondering if it is 1. punched on the wrong planchet. 2. Damaged during the Civil War or during post production. Any Ideas?

You do know the 1857 to early 1864 small cents were made of coppernickel not bronze like the later cents, and that they weighed close to twice as much? The CuNi alloy gave them a different color than the bronze cents, a lighter "whiter" color. As for the damage we would need pictures but it is probably post strike damage and it could have occurred anytime after the coin was struck, during the civil war, the Spanish American War, maybe even WWI. Indian Head cents were in circulation during all three. Or it could have happened anytime between the wars.
