Is ebay the best place to buy Modern US coins? If not, what are your suggestions? If anyone buys from ebay do you have a preferred seller?

Like any market place, the vendor is important for good service as well as prices and availability.
I would recommend local coin shops or shows if you have any available near you.

The short answer would be yes, ebay has by far the largest and widest selection of modern coin for both US and World.

ebay is a crap shoot. While there lots of reputable sellers, there are lots of others selling counterfeit or misrepresented coins. You need to have a keen eye along with some good luck. One suggestion - if you find a coin that you like - post a picture in the "US Modern Coin Grading" forum to get feedback on authenticity, grade and problems before you bid.

Davenders (Dave's Collectable Coins) is a trusted ebay seller that has been recommended several times here and I have used in the past. There is also a recommended sellers list. http://goccf.com/t/2393&whichpage=9

It really depends on what modern coins you are looking for. Raw or slabbed? Average grade or very high end?

Unless you're talking about bullion coins there are virtually no modern counterfeits on ebay. While the percentage may not be zero, it's close. Take it from someone who's literally had hundreds of thousands of counterfeits removed from ebay over the years.

If you are looking for post-1965 coinage, I agree roll hunting is your best bet. For 90% silver, I would probably try to find a LCS with a good junk silver bin, or a flea market where the prices are reasonable. Nearly all ebay sellers send tracked first class, which you either pay for directly or indirectly. ebay is good for coins worth about $10, but that your LCS wants double.

Quote:. ebay is a crap shoot. It's really not the crap shoot that reading coin forums makes it out to be. Most of the time when a buyer gets duped it's because they were trying to get a raw classic coin for pennies on the dollar for what it should have cost. Even then there are always returns and multiple layers of buyer protection. The risks are overwhelmingly on the selling side when it comes to ebay.

I have to agree. If you put in the work you will find success. Buying coins is never going to be as easy as buying milk at the store, no matter what venue you use.
