Thanks for the warm welcome yesterday guys . I've been eyeing this Marcus Aurelius Denarius. Is it a legitimate or fake coin, that's my main concern. Also if it could be identified that would greatly appreciated too. This would be purchased from ebay from world-coin 99.7% feedback 46878. Edited by mkmk139 07/19/2018 01:56 am

Looks genuine to me. Style OK. I would be tempted to bend it in my fingers, but that can be very dangerous for a genuine coin, that is suffering from silver crystallization. It could snap, but if modern lead core, it would bend. Sharpness of the radial crack below the bust helps to authenticate this coin. That suggests die struck silver. I have been deceived from pictures alone before, but only rarely.
I am all ears for other opinions, for their reasoning behind them.

@sel_69l Thanks for the tips. There are a few others I can look at but this one stood out to me the most. Currently working towards a adoptive emperors silver denarii collection.

I don't like the looks of this coin, IMO it looks cast or has environmental damage. These coins are fairly inexpensive you can find much nicer examples on vcoins.com

@echizento I wasn't too impressed at their selection to be honest. I'm just starting out and trying to fuel the hobby with minor coin purchases here and there. The first decent denarius I saw on vcoin was $60usd. I'm not saying that isn't a good price, it's just not how much I'm willing to spend yet. Maybe I wasn't looking in the right place.

I can understand that you are new to the hobby and why this coin might appeal to you, but as you gain more experience you will see why this coin really isn't what you should spend your money on. There are 10 pages of Marcus Aurelius coins listed on Vcoins granted not all denarius but I'm surprised none appeal to you there. IMO the coin you posted if genuine is only a $15 coin at best.

I was looking for silvers specifically. I'm going to make a cool little display for the adoptive emperors. Well I'll keep searching. Thanks for all your input buddy.

First thing's first - it's Commodus, not Marcus Aurelius.
You can get very nice denarii of Marcus Aurelius that you won't want to upgrade later. IMO, put aside the money you were going to spend on this coin, and get a coin twice as nice next month.

Thanks for all the input guys, I decided to pass on this one. I did manage to identify it though as RIC 112 Commodus on wildwinds.

Steve I was so caught up in the condition of the coin I didn't even notice it was Commodus.
