I'm interested in buying this coin on ebay from a seller in Estonia, which I've been told is a red flag. The person giving me advice didn't know anything about the coin itself, just that a lot of counterfeits come out of that area. The seller does claim it's authentic (I know this means practically nothing), offers a 14-day return policy, and the transaction is also covered by ebay's guarantee. Is there anything about the coin that marks it as counterfeit? To me, everything looks sharp, so I'm not sure what else I should be looking for. I tried searching for images of counterfeit Aethelred II coins online, but couldn't seem to find any, so I probably wasn't using the right search phrase. It's being sold as a straight auction, so there's no "It's too good to be true" asking price.

Thank you for the warm welcome!
Paralyse— Okay, but why specifically? I'd like to know what red flags there are so I know what to avoid next time I see something like this. Thanks for your help.

I don't see any immediate red flags. Anglo-Saxon coins turn up regularly in the Baltics. If it's a fake, it's a good one. There is always some risk, however. Assuming it's genuine, don't expect to win it for anything near its current bid. Here is an example from the same mint and moneyer but an odd variety with "geometric design" before the face (courtesy CNG). Also below is a link to the Engler study referenced in the CNG sale, an exhaustive study of the coins of Huntigdon mint. I think the ebay coin may be Engler 96. https://cNGCoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=334895https://www.britnumsoc.org/publicat...BNJ_69_6.pdf

Kushanshah— thank you so much for the detailed and informative answer. That helps a lot.
What would a genuine coin like this go for? I'd like to know where to set my expectations/how much I'd need to save?
Thank you again!

@ZoraksGirl I'm not comfortable giving bidding advice. However, you can see past results for similar coins at ebay, CNG and other auction sites. You can also compare retail prices at sites like vcoins.com and ma-shops.com.

I saw that I had apparently posted here today, when looking at my posts this evening, then realized that the post had nothing to with this coin or thread at all and I'm not quite sure how it ended up in this thread to begin with, so I fixed that problem now.
I can't help you with this coin (I know nothing about them at all!) but welcome to CCF anyway!
