As some of you may know, I'm working on assembling a Finland type set of circulating coins (up to the first Euro issues). So far, I have been basing my "complete" set off KM. My question concerns Grand Duchy of Finland silver. Do you consider the silver coins issued under each Tsar to be a different type to collect even though the design is identical (except the dotted border/large letter Alexander II)?

For example, my checklist has KM #6.1, 6.2, and 19 for 25 pennia coins. Would you consider this to be a complete set? Alternatively, KM #6.1 and 6.2 from Alexander II, KM #6.2 from Alexander III, KM #6.2 and 19 from Nicholas II?

I've been seeking the 1917 issues of KM #2.2 and 6.2 to that I also have the complete 1917 set within the type set. I think I am probably going to stick with my current strategy for now but just wanted to hear others' opinions, especially other collectors of Finnish coins.

A complete set? When you are Finnish with it.

I would consider complete Grand duchy of Finland type set to include coins from each Tsar even when design is almost identical with silver coins.

Then there is also coins minted in Turku during time when Finland was part of Sweden. But those coins are hard to come by.

Thanks for your opinion, kheldim81. I was hoping that you would see this thread. Would you say that is the general consensus among Finns who collect their own coins?

Also, I've always been interested to see what those Turku coins look like. I've never been able to find a picture.

I would imagine people either get coins for each tsar or try to collect all years. Most of circulated condition Grand duchy of Finland coins are quite affordable.

I'm personally working on getting 1 markka coins from Grand duchy era uncirculated condition and 2nd set for prooflike markka coins (those are quite rare and hard to find).

Thanks for the clarification. The general affordability is definitely something attractive about Finnish coins. However, I find a lot of the older (early NII and older) 5 and 10 pennia seem to get really beat up with rim dings and gouges in the fields (or are harshly cleaned). It can sometimes be difficult to find circulated examples with decent eye appeal.
