Conder101 Bedrock of the Community United States 17884 Posts	Posted 07/20/2018 09:54 am Yes the flag that flew over Ft McHenry, that the poem Defence of Fort M'Henry (which later became The Star Spangled Banner) was based on, had 15 stripes. The fifteen stripe flag was adopted in 1795. The number of stripes was fixed at 13 in 1818. Report this Post to the Staff

Kopper Ken Pillar of the Community United States 3402 Posts	Posted 07/20/2018 4:21 pm Yeah I believe the thought was that as new states would come in, adding a stripe would get pretty cumbersome very quickly as the nation grew. The decision was made to keep the stripe at 13 to represent the original 13 colonies and then add a new star for each incoming state. KK Report this Post to the Staff
