hi, I have a question about silver proof sets, say the 50s and 60s would it be wise to keep the coins in the original wrappers(cello) or break them out, so they wont get more scratched from being moved around, and put them in capsules, and will the sets worth more in cello, or will they sell the same as in a 5 coin holder. thanks

The older cello's were hard on coins, if they are still pristine, then they are probably OK, leave alone. If some are "toned", get those suckers a new home, set has lost eye appeal value anyway.

usually worth more in the original wrap, there will be exceptions to the rule but in general people want them in original packaging, then they have provenance..

The closer you can keep to the original packaging, the better.
Historic toy collectors are the same, you may take your lead from these folks.

Unfortunately most Proof sets, Silver or not, have lost a lot of value. If you look you would see that the individual coins sell for a lot more than if in a set.

Quote: If you look you would see that the individual coins sell for a lot more than if in a set. This is true. I believe there are more album builders than proof set collectors. Album collectors need to fill holes. Getting an intact proof set does not make sense unless they collect all denominations in it.

Selling them individually is sometimes better, since you can get more money for them.
Errers and Varietys.

The reason proof singles sell for more than the cost of the whole set is because of the inconvenience of having to make multiple sales to get rid of all the coins in the set. It takes longer, more repackaging, more inventory time and it takes longer. To compensate the price is higher.
