First off forgive me if I am posting in the wrong section. My kids' grandmother came into possession of a quarter that has both her and I confused. I have tried to look it up for something similar but had no luck. Could anyone help with a little info?

A-Little-Insight-On-A-State-Quarter?

I apologize for the quality of the image but I have no camera on hand and had to resort to using a cellphone. But this image is a State Quarter 2007 Utah the back seems fine but the face is just blank and smooth. When compared to another quarter the size and thickness is the same but a side view the silver and cooper are opposite. (The coin in the image is silver tail side, copper head side as opposed to the other quarter being opposite if that makes sense and has anything to do with the coin). Is this a true error or has it been done intentionally? Thank you for your time and patience as I try to explain this confusion.

A little hard to see, but looks someone ground off the coin's surface.
Can we see an image of the edge?

Definitely Post Strike Damage (it happened after it left the U.S. Mint). It was sanded down. You can see all of the scratches from the sanding.

I believe that the obverse was ground or sanded down. Do you see any hairline scratches on the blank side?

Getting an accurate weight of it may help, too. (0.01 gram range)

Thank you for the quick responses. I had thought sanding down would be the case but the smoothness of the blank side threw me as well as when compared to another quarter the thickness seemed to match but the copper and silver were opposites between the two coins. And I am by far a coin collector and was at a loss on this one.

PMD - if the scratches are parallel, then it was done using a belt sander or similar using a very fine belt. If they are random, it was done with a circular sander, B&D Mouse, etc. If the scratches are concentric, it was done on a lathe.
